Young Overholt at Elm Grove Farm is located in Gloucester Courthouse, VA, backed up against Beaverdam reservoir just north of the historic triangle, and a stones throw from the Chesapeake Bay. The goal of our farm is to provide a model for not only the lifestyle of those operating it, but those who wish to live a similar lifestyle; simultaneously improving the soil health for future generations. We are leveraging the free market to promote these practices, and deliver phenomenal food in both raw and finished form (plated through the catering business, mobile kitchen, or elsewhere).
In 1881 Thomas Jefferson (T.J.) Chapman purchased a 300 acre swath of land for $800 (we still have the original deed) by hauling cords of wood to Ware Neck Landing for $.50 each, and it has remained in the family ever since. In 2019, Blake Overholt, moved from San Francisco where he was in the technology industry; not far from where he grew up in Sacramento, CA. He now runs the operation as Chief Farm Hand along with his mother and father who live on site. The property hadn’t been farmed by anyone in the family since the 1950s, when his great grandfather Woodford R. Chapman passed away. Thus, he had an open slate, a slate that was factory farmed for decades, his mission became to regenerate the land and provide delicious, high quality, premium farm products to those seeking them near and far.
Starting a herd from scratch has its ups and downs, while supply has been the toughest early hurdle, we are confident that this direction is the best way to maintain quality assurance, we want every animal we process to easily grade prime+. This is why we purchased breeding stock in the form of registered Angus cattle that have marbling traits ranging from the top 1%-15% across the entire breed in the United States. Take a look for yourself, the eye appeal is fantastic, and the flavor/tenderness of any of our management practices is outstanding. We are also experimenting with Wagyu genetics starting this fall 2024.
