A Pastured Piggery | Veteran Owned & Indiana Grown
THE BEGINNING…
Family owned and operated by Jason and Amanda Hand, MKONO Farm had its beginnings with the unique responsibility of producing small batch exclusive heritage products for Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland. Our farm was birthed on the fertile banks of the Patuxent River in Southern Maryland, where we used our natural environment to raise, grow, and harvest food that is as nature intended: healthy and delicious. Our flavorful products are sustainably produced FREE FROM hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, and other junk.
THE NOW…
In August of 2021, we moved the farm to Southern Indiana. Going back to our home states roots after 20+ years is something we are thankful we have the opportunity to do. It is time to reconnect with our family, and perfect our small batch swinery and charcuterie goodness here in Indiana on a bigger farm.
In 2023, we added Navajo Churro sheep to our operation and look forward to offering this mild, sweet, slow food lamb to our product line up in March of 2024.
MKONO MEANS…
While serving in the US Navy, Jason did multiple tours in Kenya and was greatly influenced by the Swahili culture. “MKONO” (Swahili for Hand) is taken from the phrase “Mkono wa Bwana” or “the Hand of God”. Through the Hand of God we have seen His works and they are great. MKONO embraces the idea that it is in HIS strength and not ours that keeps, sustains, and provides. What He has given, we will be faithful stewards of. We are fully committed to the ethical and humane treatment of our animals and environment. Taking our “farm to table” stewardship seriously, our animals are free to roam, socialize, and eat at their pleasure making them happier and thus creating a perfectly delicious harvest.
MKONO Farm is a small batch swinery that specializes in the slow growing heritage breed Kunekune. We are a pastured piggery that practices pasture rotation fostering permaculture systems on farm. We strive to utilize the Kunekune pig in every facet we can by selling show/breeding stock, homestead stock, feeders to whole pig, roasters, meat by the cut, and charcuterie. Our pigs are humanely raised, well loved, and grass fed from start to finish.
